Integrated health care following sexual assault

Multidisciplinary team presentation to support GPs to provide trauma-informed, coordinated care for patients after sexual assault.

Covering medical management, sensitive history-taking, mandatory reporting, and referral pathways to specialist services.

This 90-minute presentation by the Sexual Assault Resource Centre aims to improve the ability of GPs to respond to both recent and historical sexual assaults. The presentation will discuss the trauma-informed approach; addressing a patient’s medical, forensic and psychosocial needs; and resources for GPs. There will also be opportunities to discuss cases that participating GPs have already seen in their practice.

Presenter: Dr Matilda-Jane Oke BSc(Adv)(Hons) MBBS MPH MForensMed FRACGP

Matilda has worked at SARC since 2019. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and completed a Master of Forensic Medicine (Monash University) in 2023. She regularly provides training to doctors, nurses, medical students and police on the management of sexual assault patients, and currently holds the SARC Medical Education and Training portfolio. Matilda has special interests in sexual/reproductive health and LGBTQIA+ health, and has published a research paper on improving the forensic genital examination for trans and gender diverse sexual assault complainants. She has also worked in Emergency Departments around Perth, passing her Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Primary Examinations in 2018.
