Liver Cancer: The role of Primary Care in reducing the burden
ASHM, in collaboration with Cancer Council WA, alongside the Liver Foundation and clinical experts, invites GPs, nurses, and allied health providers, to a focused 1-hour webinar on Hepatocellular cancer epidemiology and key risk factors, including Hepatitis B and C, alcohol use, Metabolically Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), and some non-modifiable risk factors.
It will also provide practical guidance on assessing and reducing risk in general practice, and outline surveillance methods and referral pathways to support early detection and effective patient care.
Diagnosis and treatment of HCC will be addressed in this comprehensive education session designed to highlight the vital role of primary care in reducing incidence and improving the outcomes of liver cancer.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand the risk factors for HCC in the primary care population (including age, sex, ethnicity, alcohol use, MAFLD and viral hepatitis
- Develop knowledge regarding the assessment of risk factors for HCC (i.e. how to assess for cirrhosis)
- Identify therapeutic options to reduce the risk of HCC (addressing alcohol use, smoking cessation, diabetes management, and viral hepatitis treatment)
- Understand how to perform surveillance for HCC, including recommended imaging techniques, surveillance frequency, serum markers and appropriate referral pathways
This activity is funded by the Western Australian Department of Health.
Endorsement and CPD: RACGP endorsement pending for one educational activity hour.
